The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is responsible for maintaining an inventory of historic properties and for the nomination of properties to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). In addition, it assists federal agencies in the application of the requirements established in the National Historic Preservation Act (1966). The SHPO understands that the conservation of historic properties contributes to the protection of natural resources and to economic development and that, conversely, this results in the integral improvement of the individual and collective quality of life of Puerto Rican citizens. The SHPO manages the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) in Puerto Rico. The assignment of these funds, for the completion of studies and inventories, is done through a process of request of proposals. Another priority of the SHPO is to educate about the properties which are listed in the NRHP and on other aspects associated to the conservation of Puerto Rico’s historic resources.

The archive and library of the State Historic Preservation Office specializes in history, archaeology, architecture, engineering, and the conservation of patrimonial assets in Puerto Rico. It grows from the work that, from its creation, the SHPO has produced and funded. All this information is available to students, professionals, and the public. The bibliographic sources and records include plans, topographic maps, images, publications, journals, books, specialized guidelines in conservation, nominations, archeological reports, architectural and archaeological surveys, among others. Also available are studies, inventories, and publications which are funded annually by the HPF. On the other hand, the National Register of Historic Places in Washington, D.C. showcases and gives access through their online database to information on historical properties in Puerto Rico which, due to their significance regarding history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture, have been nominated and listed in this register at the national, state, or local levels.

The State Historic Preservation Office is located on the third floor of the Cuartel de Ballajá at the corner of Norzagaray and Beneficencia Streets in Old San Juan.
